01The brief

The insight

The Broad’s concrete structure changed how we saw the scale of mesh and airflow.

The hard call

Ribs too weak to be structural, no room for panel gaps, and round ribs that wasted volume.

02What I did

What I made

  • The concept, with designer Vincent Lin
  • Years of design iterations
  • The principle: every side different, one body

What I led

  • Concept through engineering, and the call to stop

03In my words

Z90 began as a rough concept with one of our designers, Vincent Lin, while the Y70 was still being created. It was born on a trip we took to the Broad museum. Its concrete structure had us reimagining the scale of mesh and airflow, and the result was visually very striking.

We spent years reworking the design so it could reach its highest visual form. One principle we landed on: each side of the case should look different but feel like the same body, the way your face, hands and feet don't look like each other.

Engineering it into a real product was a nightmare. The ribs weren't strong enough to be structural, the design was too perfect to allow panel gaps, and the round ribs wasted a lot of volume. Eventually we had to call it quits, and that was how the X50 was born.
